Tom & EJC

PROJECT OVERVIEW

initially RICH MARK HOLDING (PVT) LTD have been started Tom & EJC plant selling project and started cultivation with large scale land owners (Traditional plantations) to raise up their income with us with special land development projects. Just we have been started cultivation for export purpose. “RMH”–“TomEJC” can be seen in Europe and Midlist countries near future and also Modern Trade centers in Sri Lanka. Just we are installing our manufacturing plant in “Industrial Zone of Galigamuwa”. Under this project we are going to introduce value added range of products to world market.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES
METHOD PLANTS CAN BE GROWN (MAXIMUM) MEANING OF TECHNOLOGY CABLE DIFFERENCE APPLICABLE IN THIS METHODS
DENSITY
160

NOT APPLICABLE
HIGH DENSITY
560
THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN ROWS AND THERE IS A DOUBLE MANGO RAWS
30 CM/60/CM/90CM
ULTRA HIGH DENSITY
650
THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN RAWS AND THERE IS A SINGLE MANGO RAWS AD PLANTS PRACTICE FOR TWO ROOTS WITH SUPPORT OF CAVLE LINES
31 CM/60 CM/ 90 CM

Density Method

(by using this method there can be planted maximum 160 plants in one acer, there can’t be done under crop, when we considering this technology lifetime of the plant is gone little bit higher than the other two methods)

High density method

(when we use this method that can be done ground crop as well, when consider about that can be planted 480 to 560 plants by using method of double raw method, there is a big advantage here when we consider about double row method there is a huge gap between the rows. And when we using these things normally it could be earned more than 10,00,000 LKR from one acer from other cops.)

For commercial TJC mango cultivation in Sri Lanka, high-density planting is practiced, with common spacings of 5x5m, 5x6m, and 6x6m, with 5x5m being the most applicable.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the density method for TJC mango cultivation in Sri Lanka:

High-Density Planting: This method is favored for commercial cultivation due to the limited availability of land and the potential for higher yields per acre.

Common Spacings:

5×5 meters

5×6 meters

6×6 meters

Most Applicable Spacing: 5×5 meters

Planting Hole Size:

60cm x 60cm x 60cm

If the soil is very hard, increase to 90cm x 90cm x 90cm

Planting Hole Preparation:

Refill the planting hole with organic manure (20kg) and topsoil before planting.

Allow 2 weeks for the soil to settle before planting.

TJC Mango:

The TJC mango, or TomEJC, is a cultivar developed and introduced by Ellawala Horticulture (Pvt) Ltd, a pioneer in commercial mango cultivation in Sri Lanka.

It is known for its large size and juicy flesh, with fruits averaging 600g, and some weighing over 1kg.

It was first discovered in Sri Lanka in the early 1990s and received formal recognition from the Department of Agriculture in 2003.

Other Cultivation Practices:

Site Selection: Choose a well-drained site with full sun exposure.

Soil Preparation: Mango trees prefer loamy or sandy soils with excellent drainage.

Seed Propagation: While mango trees can be grown from seeds, grafting is a more predictable method for ensuring fruit quality.

Grafting: Top/wedge grafting is a common method used for mango seedlings.

Ultra-high-density method

(By using this method that can be planted 650 plants in one acer. As high-density method that can be grown under crop between rows. This concept practiced grow up TJC plant with help of cables. Under crop income same as high density method.

In Sri Lanka, Ultra-High-Density Plantation (UHDP) of TJC mangoes involves planting trees at close intervals (e.g., 5×5 meters) to maximize yield and utilize space efficiently, using techniques like drip irrigation and fertigation.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of UHDP for TJC mango cultivation in Sri Lanka:

What is UHDP?

UHDP is a technique that allows farmers to plant a higher number of trees per unit area compared to traditional methods, aiming to increase productivity and profitability.

It’s particularly beneficial for mangoes like TJC, which are known for their high yield potential.

SOMETHING ABOUT TOM & EJC

TJC Mango is probably the world’s biggest, juiciest mango! The average weight of a fruit is 600g but fruit weighing over one kg are not uncommon Mango is a lovely golden fruit with a beautiful skin. It has excellent flavor, low fiber content and a smooth fleshy pulp. The small seed means there is more flesh to eat. The fruit ripens slowly giving time for the produce to reach the market.

Name of the Cultivar/Variety: – TomEJC

Origin: –

This mango was first discovered in Sri Lanka by Tom Ellawala in his mango orchard among a collection of many local and introduced varieties planted by him in the early 1990’s. Over the next 10 years Tom propagated many mango plants in his plant nursery, selected the one he knew would become a winner, naming it TomEJC he approached the Department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka for classification. The TomEJC cultivar received formal recognition from the Department of Agriculture in 2003 and is now the variety of choice for cultivation in the Dry & Intermediate Zones of Sri Lanka.

TomEJC is well adapted to the dry zone. The existence of this cultivar could be identified as a new variety having distinct properties when compared to the other standard recommended Sri Lankan varieties. It is a regular heavy bearer of high-quality fruits. The TomEJC mango season which lasts 7 to 8 months extends from June to January.

Under similar management practices, it has been proven that TomEJC is superior to other popular local varieties recommended by the Department of Agriculture, particularly Karthacolomban or KC in relation to time taken for maturity, flowering habits, production per tree, fruit quality, resistance to pests and diseases and acceptance by the export market.

TOMEJC - HOW DID WE GET THE NAME?

Tom: after the Chairman of Ellawala Exports (Pvt) Ltd

E: for Ellawala Horticulture (Pvt) Ltd

JC: for the late Dr. Juan Carlos from the Philippines, who helped us identify the variety and introduced modern methods of growing mango to the farm.

1.Crop/Botanical Name : – Mangifera Indica L

2.Name of the Cultivar/Variety: – TomEJC

3.Introduction: – TomEJC is well established and adapted to the dry zone. The existence of this cultivar could be identified as a new variety having distinct properties when compared to the other standard recommended varieties. It is a regular heavy bearer of high-quality fruits. The distinct morphological, botanical and horticultural characteristics are demonstrated in the second generation as well.

4.Method of Multiplication: Vegetative Propagation (Budding and Grafting)

5.Yield: The yield of this variety is promising and available in an extended fruiting season.

6.Reaction to Abiotic Stresses: – The TomEJC is drought tolerant. The flowering and pollination are not affected by rains and wind.

7.Response to Fertilizer: -TomEJC responds very well to organic manure as indicated by its strong vegetative growth and less fruit abscission. The tree is prolific when the recommendations of the Department of Agriculture (DOA) are used.

8.Tree: – 3-4 meters height, spreading, branched at 0.5-1 meters from ground level, intermediate habit.

9.Fruit Characteristics: –

  • Shape: – oblong
  • Mean Length: -12.5 cm
  • Mean Diameter: – 8.18 cm
  • Mean Fresh Weight: 517.6 g

TomEJC is well established and adapted to the dry zone. The existence of this cultivar could be identified as a new variety having distinct properties when compared to the other standard recommended varieties. It is a regular heavy bearer of high-quality fruits.
